GEORGE REEVES COSTUME FROM ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN UP FOR AUCTION

GEORGE REEVES COSTUME FROM ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN

Bonhams auction house has listed an original Superman costume worn by George Reeves in the “Adventures of Superman” 1952-1958 TV series up for auction. The costume is on display at Bonhams New York location. Bidding starts on November 21, 2017 at 1:00PM EST.

This auction includes a smoky blue wool long-sleeved leotard with a stitched-on red and yellow felt Superman "S" logo on the center chest, bearing an interior "Western Costume Co." label inscribed "No. 99-2471-1 / Name: George Reeves / Chest: 44," with a red silk cape attached to the collar of the tunic and a similarly stitched felt Superman "S" logo on the cape, with matching form-fitting stirrup pants and a pair of red trunks. The auction is accompanied by a color photograph of George Reeves wearing the costume.

Adventures in Superman was broadcast in black-and-white for the first two seasons, and featured Reeves in a brown, white, and grey costume (the colors needed for these broadcasts). The color seasons began airing in 1955, and Superman’s costume changed to the one offered here in the classic red, yellow, and blue design.

Adventures of Superman lead a genre of comic book films and television shows that have continued to grow over the years. Many believe that others have portrayed the character of Superman successfully, but none have become quite as synonymous with the Man of Steel as George Reeves, television's very first "Superman.”
